How Crosswind Calculation Works
Crosswind calculation uses trigonometry to determine the headwind and crosswind components based on:
- Wind Speed: The speed of the wind
- Wind Direction: The direction the wind is coming from
- Runway Heading: The direction the runway is oriented
The formulas used are:
Crosswind = Wind Speed × sin(θ)
Headwind = Wind Speed × cos(θ)
Where θ is the angle between the wind direction and runway heading.
Crosswind Limits Guide
Different aircraft have different crosswind limits. As a general guide:
| Crosswind Component | Condition | Difficulty Level |
|---|---|---|
| 0-5 kts | Light | Easy |
| 6-15 kts | Moderate | Moderate |
| 16-25 kts | Strong | Difficult |
| 25+ kts | Extreme | Dangerous |
Always consult your aircraft's operating manual for specific limits.
